One of the key figures in Greek mythology, Cadmus is a legendary character with a significant role in the founding of the city of Thebes. According to ancient tales, Cadmus was the son of King Agenor of Tyre and brother to Europa. The name Cadmus is derived from the Phoenician word "Qdm" which means "east." His journey began when his sister Europa was abducted by Zeus, who had taken the shape of a bull. In search of Europa, Cadmus was instructed by his father to travel until he found her or at least a suitable place to establish a new kingdom.
During his quest, Cadmus consulted the oracle of Delphi, who advised him to abandon the search for his sister and instead follow a cow that would appear to him. The cow, led by the gods, led Cadmus to Boeotia in Greece. Recognizing the divine intervention, Cadmus decided to sacrifice the cow to Athena, the goddess of wisdom and war. The instructions from the oracle instructed him to sow the cow's teeth into the ground, which grew into a group of fully armed soldiers called Spartoi. In a fierce battle, Cadmus managed to slay all the Spartoi except for five, from whom he made allies. This crucial event marked the foundation of Thebes.
In later years, Cadmus married Harmonia, the daughter of Ares, the god of war, and Aphrodite, the goddess of love. This union was celebrated with the gift of a magnificent necklace, which became known as the Necklace of Harmonia. Sadly, the couple was plagued by misfortune and eventually transformed into serpents, doomed to suffer eternal torment. Nevertheless, Cadmus left an indelible mark through his contributions to the cultural life of Thebes and his introduction of the Phoenician alphabet to Greece, which eventually led to the development of the Greek alphabet used today.
